Stop Rust in Its Tracks — Without Grinding to Bare Metal

Traditional rust repair requires hours of grinding, sandblasting, or chemical stripping to get back to bare metal before you can paint or coat. Rusts Gone™ eliminates that step entirely. Its phosphoric acid-based formula reacts with iron oxide (rust) and converts it into a stable iron phosphate compound that actually improves coating adhesion. The result: a dark, sealed surface ready for topcoat, primer, or barrier coatings like Under Gone™.

Converts rust chemically — Rusts Gone™ transforms active iron oxide into stable iron phosphate through a controlled chemical reaction. The converted surface is harder than the original rust and bonds permanently to the underlying metal.
Paintable in hours — Once cured, the converted surface is ready for primer, paint, or topcoat application. The iron phosphate layer provides an excellent adhesion profile that outperforms bare metal for many coating systems.
Stops the spread — Untreated rust continues spreading under coatings, causing blistering and flaking. Rusts Gone™ halts the corrosion reaction permanently, preventing rust from migrating into clean metal.

How Rust Conversion Works

A chemical reaction that turns your biggest problem into your best foundation.

Phosphoric Acid Reaction

The active ingredient reacts with iron oxide (Fe₂O₃) to form iron phosphate (FePO₄) — a dense, stable compound that is chemically inert and resistant to further oxidation. This isn’t a cosmetic cover-up; it’s a molecular transformation.

Encapsulation Layer

The iron phosphate conversion layer forms a physical seal over the treated surface, locking out moisture and oxygen — the two elements rust needs to continue spreading. Any remaining unconverted rust is encapsulated and rendered inactive.

Adhesion Promoter

Iron phosphate is widely used in industrial metal finishing as a pre-treatment specifically because it improves paint adhesion. Rusts Gone™ doesn’t just fix the rust problem — it creates a better foundation for your topcoat than bare metal alone.

How to Use Rusts Gone™

Surface Preparation

Remove loose, flaking rust and scale with a wire brush or scraper. You do not need to get back to bare metal — Rusts Gone™ is designed to work on firmly adhered rust. Remove any oil, grease, or wax with a degreaser. For best results, pre-wash with Salts Gone® to remove embedded salt from the rusted surface.

Application

  • Brush or roller: Apply a generous, even coat directly over the rusted area. Work the product into pits and crevices where rust is heaviest.
  • Spray application: For larger areas, apply with a pump sprayer or HVLP gun. Maintain even coverage and avoid runs on vertical surfaces.
  • Multiple coats: For heavy rust, apply a second coat after the first has dried to the touch (typically 2–4 hours depending on conditions). Two thin coats outperform one thick coat.

Cure Time

Rusts Gone™ begins reacting on contact — you’ll see the rust darken as the conversion process starts. Full cure takes 24 hours at 70°F. The surface will turn a uniform dark gray-black when fully converted. Do not apply topcoats until the surface is completely cured.

Topcoating

Once cured, the converted surface accepts most topcoats including:

  • Under Gone™ rubberized undercoating
  • Thixo-Coat™ thixotropic protectant
  • Automotive primer and paint systems
  • Industrial epoxy and urethane coatings
  • Rust-preventive paints

No additional primer is required in most applications — the iron phosphate layer serves as an excellent primer coat.

Best Use Cases

  • Vehicle frames, subframes, and crossmembers
  • Wheel wells and fender lips
  • Trailer frames and suspension components
  • Industrial equipment and machinery
  • Agricultural implements
  • Marine hardware and structural steel
  • Any ferrous metal with existing rust

What Our Customers Say

Trusted by boaters, drivers, fleet operators, and homeowners across the country.

This is a must have if you live in the rust belt. I use it on my truck and tractor. It's amazing stuff.

As a coastal homeowner, we are finally able to efficiently protect our property from the corrosive environment around us.

I have been using Salts Gone on my boat and jet ski now for 2 years. Best product I have ever used. Way better than the competitors.

We use Salts Gone on our plow trucks after each snow event and are very happy with the results! Clean trucks with no salt residue left behind.

Best salt fighting product on the market. Honest advertisements unlike the competitor.

What a shocking experience! My pickup is not only showing no signs of salt, it is cleaner than it was before!

Common Questions About Rust Conversion

Everything you need to know about converting and stopping rust.

Rusts Gone™ works on any ferrous (iron-based) rust — from light surface rust to heavy, pitted corrosion. For best results, remove loose, flaking scale first so the product can make contact with firmly adhered rust. It does not work on aluminum oxidation or copper patina, as those are different chemical compounds.
No — that’s the whole point. Rusts Gone™ is designed to be applied directly over rust. Just remove loose, flaking material and apply. The chemical conversion process does the work that grinding and sandblasting would normally do, saving you hours of labor.
The surface will turn a uniform dark gray-black color when the conversion is complete. This typically takes 24 hours at 70°F. If you still see reddish-brown areas, those sections may need a second coat. Do not topcoat until the entire surface is uniformly dark.
Yes, strongly recommended. Embedded salt under rust will continue causing corrosion even after the surface rust is converted. Pre-washing with Salts Gone® removes those hidden salt deposits, giving Rusts Gone™ a clean substrate for optimal conversion and long-term durability.
Almost any topcoat: Under Gone™ undercoating, Thixo-Coat™ protectant, automotive primer and paint, industrial epoxy, urethane coatings, or rust-preventive paints. The iron phosphate conversion layer is an excellent adhesion promoter for most coating systems.
Rusts Gone™ provides short-term protection on its own, but for maximum durability we recommend applying a topcoat within 72 hours of curing. The converted surface is stable but not a permanent standalone barrier against the elements.
Yes, with adequate ventilation. Rusts Gone™ has low VOC content and minimal odor compared to traditional rust converters. Use in a well-ventilated area and wear appropriate PPE including gloves and eye protection. Refer to the Safety Data Sheet for complete handling instructions.
